ABSTRACT
Objetivo: Dar a conocer la historia de la primera radiografía tomada en Colombia, resaltando la importancia de esta nueva ayuda diagnóstica en el tratamiento de un paciente. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de las revistas médicas publicadas en Colombia entre 1900 y 1915 en la biblioteca médica del Hospital de San José, la biblioteca de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y la biblioteca médica de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Antioquia. Se consultaron las siguientes revistas de la época: Acta Médica Colombiana, Anales de la Academia de Medicina de Medellín y Repertorio de Medicina y Cirugía. Resultados: Se logró documentar la primera radiografía publicada en Colombia y el contexto clínico del paciente en el cual se utilizó este avance tecnológico, lo que significó una revolución para la medicina del país en el año 1902. Además, se hace una reseña histórica del Dr. Juan Bautista Montoya y Flórez, quien trajo el primer equipo de rayos X al país. Conclusiones: La primera radiografía en Colombia fue tomada por el Dr. Juan Bautista Montoya y Flórez el 4 de julio de 1902 en la ciudad de Medellín. La imagen obtenida mostró una fractura oblicua en la falange proximal del cuarto dedo de la mano izquierda y varios fragmentos de plomo adyacente, información que permitió al cirujano realizar la extracción de los fragmentos con éxito. De esta forma, se inicia una nueva época de la medicina en Colombia, donde los clínicos reconocen en las imágenes diagnósticas una ayuda importante para el tratamiento de sus pacientes.
Objective: Spreading the history of the first radiograph taken in Colombia, highlighting the importance of this diagnostic aid in the treatment of a patient. Materials and methods: A search was made in medical journals published between 1900 and 1915 in Colombia in the San José Hospital Medical Library, the National University of Colombia library and the medical library of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antioquia. The following journals of the time were found: Acta Médica Colombiana, Annals of the Academy of Medicine of Medellín and Repertoire of Medicine and Surgery. Results: It was possible to document the first radiograph published in Colombia and the clinical context of the patient in which this technological advance was applied, which meant a revolution for the medicine of the country in 1902. Besides, a historical review was made of Dr. Juan Bautista Montoya y Flórez, who brought the first X-Ray equipment to the country. Conclusions: The first radiography in Colombia was taken in July 4, 1902, by Dr. Juan Bautista Montoya y Flórez in the city of Medellín. In this image it was possible to observe an oblique fracture of the proximal phalanx of the fourth finger of the left hand and several adjacent fragments of adjacent lead, allowing the surgeon to perform the extraction of the fragments successfully. In this way began a new age of medicine in Colombia, where medical practitioners recognized diagnostic images as an important aid in the treatment of their patients.
